Historic Reunion Concert
One Night Only!
At Ashkenaz
1317 San Pablo (at Gilman), Berkeley, CA
Saturday, September 10, 2016 at 8 PM

In the late 1960s, two Berkeley based bands played at all the major clubs, ballrooms and concert venues throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, sometimes on the same bill.

The Joy of Cooking with Terri Garthwaite and Toni Brown, was one of the first female fronted bands. They were known for a rollicking blend of folk-rock with a blues/jazz influence that invariably got concert goers out on the dance floor.

Country Joe and the Fish was one of the first and foremost psychedelic bands of the era. Both bands made records and achieved national and international fame. By the early 1970s, both groups had dissolved, although some of the members, notably Country Joe McDonald, went on to successful solo careers.

On Saturday, September 10, a historic reunion will take place at Askenaz. Three of the original members of The Joy of Cooking, Terri Garthwaite, David Garthwaite and Fritz Kasten, will play together for the first time in several decades. They will be joined by Oona Garthwaite, David's daughter, in playing classic hits and new material.

Country Joe and the Electric Music Band will present classics from the Country Joe and the Fish repertoire.

Also on the bill are local singer/songwriter, Hali Hammer and other guests. The event is a joint benefit for Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center and the Berkeley Historical Society, which in the fall of 2017, will present Soundtrack to the 60s, an exhibit documenting the entire 1960s Berkeley music scene, from folk to rock, to rhythm and blues.

Tickets are $20, with half of the proceeds going to the Berkeley Historical Society. They are available on the Ashkenaz website, www.ashkenaz.com, and at the door. Doors open at 7:30 PM, Show starts at 8PM. Wear your most festive 60s attire and come prepared to boogie!
